Paloma

Born April 3, 2008 mid morning.

I had stayed over night at the Shed for three nights with Jez.  The morning of April 3, which was also my 36th Wedding  Anniversary, I left to go to my Chiropractor and when I got back, the baby was on the ground, wet and wooly.

Jez welcomed me to help rub her baby dry and Imprint.  Jez would lick her then I would rub her. We took turns getting to know the new baby.  Jez was so patient helping her to nurse, she would bend at the knees so the baby could find the nipples.  It was quite a site, because Peruvians are so limber, almost cat like.

There were three doves just sitting on the rail as if to watch over the new baby.  Thus the name Paloma which means Dove in Spanish.

Paloma was a lively Baby and copied every thing her Momma did with gusto.  She was eating Beet Pulp at two days old, running, bucking, and kicking out.  Her speed and lightness was amazing.

After a couple of wonderful weeks, Jez started getting irritated with Paloma.  She started kicking and biting at her when she tried to nurse.  Paloma started hanging closer to Coretta.  Usually she would be half way in between the two Mares and Jez did not seem to care anymore.  It broke my heart to see the bewilderment in Paloma when she would get near her Mamma and Jez would pin her ears.

One morning when Paloma was about two Months old Jez kicked her in the mouth and broke out her front tooth.  I called the Vet and he said we had to wean Paloma because the next kick could be fatal!

That was a sad tough week for everyone involved.  As in Human cases, Paloma still wanted to be with her Momma, but we had to keep them separated for Paloma's safety.

June 15, the day that Coretta had her little Filly, we took Jez to another pasture.  Coretta allowed Paloma to nurse along with her new baby, Sienna.  That day, Coretta became the best Momma in the World.

Paloma is a kind, loving gentle sweetheart and doing quite well.  She can now hang with any of the horses including Jez.  I play the Parelli games with her and Sienna, her Sister.  I am grateful to Coretta for accepting Paloma as her own and to Sienna for sharing her Momma.
