Shadow

We went to the Mile High Horse Auction to get Mark a horse.  We looked the horses over on the outside pens.  I saw a beautiful black horse that was scared and lathered with sweat.  I looked the other way because I could not stand the look of fear in his eyes and did not feel like I could do anything about it.

When my Husband bid on the horse that he wanted, I asked if we could leave, but he wanted to watch more of them sell.  I knew we were in trouble.

When Shadow came into the sale ring, he looked straight at me as if to say " please save me."  I asked Mark to bid on him.  He said "what are we going to do with him?"  I said that I did not know but he needed me to save him.  We got him for $475.00 because he looked so crazy that not many people bid on him.  He was so skinny that it was a W between his hips and spine.  He really looked pathetic.

He loaded in the trailer with no problem and we took him to my Brother's Elk Ranch.  We did not have a place of our own to keep him.

We went to the Brand Inspection office in Denver and the office girl just happened to have worked the Auction the night we got Shadow.  She remembered him because they did not get horses like that through the auction barn.  She helped us find the breeder who had given him away because she thought he was dangerous.  She was so thrilled I had gotten him that she transferred his registration papers to me.  His registered name is Conejo De Nieve which means "Rabbit in the Snow."

For the first couple of years, we just loved him and gave him TLC.  Several Parelli Trainers worked with him and said he was a very difficult horse and if we got rid of him he would surely go to the killers.

With Time, Patience, games and love, Shadow is rideable.  He has taken me to the Rawah Wilderness area through trees and bogs, into lakes and over streams.  He is quite the smooth ride.  My Son, Tad rides and plays with him, they make a great team.
