Zorro
I received a phone call from Susan Moore about
a Peruvian Paso yearling Stud that needed a home. She knew that I
had a soft spot for Paso's and had already rescued three of them.
This Paso lived East of Brighton and it took me an hour and half
driving on a clear road day.
Of course I fell in love with him as soon as I
set eyes on him. My Husband said it didn't really matter what they
looked like, I thought all horses were beautiful and he was right.
If it is a horse, it is beautiful to me.
They called him Sparky because of the buckskin
highlights on him and he was a Sparky. He didn't want anything to
do with people unless they were feeding. I really did not want him
to be Sparky and on the drive home, the name Zorro just popped into
my head so he got a new home and a new name.
It took 9 hours of hanging out in his pen before I could get a
halter on him and it still was not a piece of cake. He would let me
touch his butt. If I got near his face, he whipped around to the
other side of the small pen. There I was looking at his butt again,
thank goodness he did not offer to kick. I decided that I really
needed to take him back to my place in Ft.Collins if I was going to
get a relationship with him.
I picked him up on a cold snowy day in January
2007. I took Shadow with me so he could bond with him on the way
home. It took 1 hour to get him into the horse trailer , which is
not bad considering that he had not been out of his small pen.
There was a couple of feet of snow on the ground and blizzard
conditions.
When I got him home, I continued playing the Parelli games at
Liberty and doing Equine Touch on him with out a halter. Finally he
willingly stuck his nose in the halter and I knew we would be great
partners.
He turned 2 years old in Sept of 2007 and
started getting real pushy. I called the Vet to geld him but found
out that he was Crypt orchid which means that he still had a
testicle up in his abdomen. After a 2 hour surgery and $1000.00
later, I had a very nice gelding. So much for a free horse.
February 2008- Zorro loves to play games. He
will come up to the rail so that I can hang on him. He plays with
the obstacles and jumps. If it is feeding time, he will pick up his
feed pan and hold it in the air. He is a gentle soul and loves to
please. I do believe that he will be my next Dance Partner.
March 2008- We unexpectedly found out the
before Zorro was gelded, he was able to breed Jezabelle. We
know have a beautiful baby Paloma.
